Every year, Louisiana CASA hosts a conference called “Together We Can”.  It’s hosted in different cities each year, and CASA programs from all over the state come together to learn and exchange ideas.

One of the most favorite classes among the CASA of NELA staff was a workshop called “Kids, Families, Drug Addiction… and CASA”.  It had some very valuable information for our supervisors and advocates, so we wanted to share some information from the workshop here on our blog.

family-praying-140x140Drug addiction is a chronic, relapsing disorder in which compulsive drug-seeking and drug-taking behavior persists despite serious negative consequences and is a major problem plaguing society today.  It has a devastating effect on families: whether the user is a child or parent.  It is no secret that the majority of children that CASA volunteers deal with come from homes where substance abuse is a problem.  Knowing how to recognize what the drugs look like, the indicators of someone under the influence, what to do if someone has a substance abuse problem, and understanding how drugs affect children, is only the first part of the battle.  CASA volunteers are personally at risk due to the very nature of their job.Steroid Raid

This workshop provided valuable training to help identify substance abuse, created a better understanding of the effects of illicit drug use on the newborn, child, and adolescent, and provided an understanding of how drug use affects all of us.
